Nxt Mindstorms Sensors

Is it possible to build a custom sensor/module for NXT Mindstorms?

I was wondering if anyone here has built a custom sensor and managed to interface it with a lego Mindstorms NXT brick.

If yes, what micro controller did you use? Basic Stamp?

Example: If I were to say, want to build a microphone module - Could I build the circuit and then connect it to the brick using the available ports and then upload my code as you would do for other sensors?

I haven't built one but I know you can. The key would be configuring the thresholds on your microcontroller.
